The San Fernando Valley Business Journal honored Polina Bernstein and Diana Friedland as the “Business Team of the Year” during the publication’s 13th Annual Women in Business Awards held April 15, 2014 at the Sheraton Universal Hotel in Universal City. The annual event, which was attended by more than 550 professionals, and which solicited more than 120 nominations, recognized women business leaders in the San Fernando Valley.

Sisters Polina Bernstein and Diana Friedland will soon celebrate the third anniversary of their partnership at Bernstein & Friedland, P.C., where they handle all facets of employment law matters, including discrimination, harassment, retaliation, unpaid wage, and breach of employment agreement matters. Bernstein started the practice after she left her position in the Labor and Employment Department of Winston & Strawn LLP, a multinational law firm, and after giving birth to her third daughter. She decided to start her own law firm at the beginning of the economic downturn and with three young children, ages four, two, and six months. At the time, she did not have even one client. Very soon, however, through sheer hard work and dedication, her practice began booming. Despite the fact that her younger sister Diana Friedland had a secure job she enjoyed as an associate in the downtown LA office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, LLP, a prestigious global law firm, it did not take much convincing for her to say “yes” when her sister invited her to partner.
Today, the sisters have a successful law practice where they aggressively seek justice for their clients, many of whom are female and/or minority workers who were illegally terminated because they are disabled or because they requested a medical- or pregnancy-related leave of absence, because they complained about sexual harassment or other illegalities in the workplace, or because they are older workers. Since the start of the firm, Bernstein and Friedland have obtained millions of dollars in settlements for their employee clients. In addition, they provide advice and counseling and litigation defense to companies large and small.
What makes the practice unique is that the sisters truly do work as a team on all cases. Each sister has different strengths, and the two are able to combine to provide the best representation possible for clients.
